Albuquerque, NM
April 25-28, 2005
On April 25-28, 2005, the Second Annual Direct Service Tribes Conference
was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Over 400 Tribal leaders, health directors, health providers, and
governmental representatives attended the conference.
On
April 26th, Indian Health Service Director Charles Grim, surrounded
by members of the Direct Service Tribes Conference Planning Committee,
signed a charter officially sanctioning the Direct Service Tribes
as a committee within the Indian Health Service. Although the charter
was signed only recently, Dr. Grim made certain the Direct Service
Tribes were included as an entity in the Department of Health and
Human Services (HHS) Tribal Consultation Policy and the soon to
be approved IHS Tribal Consultation Policy.
The conference proved to be very valuable and included presentations
covering several topics, including:
- Contract Health Services
- Medicare and Medicaid
- Services for American Indian & Alaska Native veterans
- Indian Health Service Budget Process
- Health Disparities
- Behavioral Health
Some of the highlights of the conference included a musical performance
by San Juan Pueblo Governor Joseph Garcia during the Welcoming Reception,
a JUST MOVE IT event, and luncheon. A report of the conference is
currently being finalized and will be available on the website in
the near future.
